Yeah the timing belt on my old 240 was that way. Took some special tools to do the work. Tried to do it without them for a couple of hours and it made spending the $$$ to get it done at the dealer much easier to deal with. Especially the cost of the tools would have been about half the total. You have to pick and choose you battles I guess.
