Overheating Problem 200 1989

1989 245 DL non turbo 182k miles and transmission cooler (I added a few months ago). Temp gauge usually points to 8 O'Clock, now points to 10 O'clock but below red zone. This occurs intermittently, eg about five minutes after car is started and at other times, like after driving on freeway for 10 minutes. If I turn on the heater, the temp gauge falls within 1 minute. If I do nothing the temp gauge falls to 8 O'Clock position after a few minutes.

Fan clutch changed yesterday (old fan clutch seemd ok). Coolant level is steady without bubbles. Fan belts are tight. Radiator is evenly warm. No leaks seen (oil seals in front changed along with timing belt 2 months ago). Upper and lower radiator hoses are warm. Coolant pressure testing normal (1/2 psi loss over 5 minutes, which is normal for this car and my other cars). Compression: 162 psi, 160 psi, 165 psi, 166 psi. Spark plugs have white film. Oil is amber without particles. coolant has a couple of drops of oil. No unusal noises (though my other volvos made no noises when their water pumps died). No white smoke out of the tail pipe.
