I have this problem regularly. The usual culprit is a hidden nylon slider in the upper part of the part of the mechanism bolted to the door post. There is a lubrication hole that needs a shot of WD-40 or other light lubricant. Then reach up inside with a finger and move the slider a few times to loosen it. I actually went so far as buying a new plate before I realized that it had a moving part.
