another thing, the shifting rods that the gear changing forks ride on protrude out of the front of the transmission and into recesses in the bell housing,(there is a gasket between the transmission and the bell housing).
Sounds like a M46. Has the bellhousing perhaps got the right shape but is it just tilted?
