thanks to you both.if anyone else has done this please chime in!i have the spare box in hand(original still on car)and it does appear the upper seal only goes on one way(the flange to the block).there's a recessed area on the flange that would,i suppose,compress to a ridge on the block,sealing that area.the bottom seal would most definatly be easier to install without the clamps.so it just slides on with no sealer?i'm not sure which seal is leaking on mine yet,i just know i sprayed the area with carb cleaner and after a short drive,it's wet underneath the box with oil.not much clearance to see that area with everything still assembled,quite abit of neck cranking and with my screwed up neck that's not alot of fun.
i remember when i removed the spare from a parts car it was a pain in the a$$ even with the the P/S pump and alt. out of the way.
