The first time I used an extractor I used the round, spiral type and it broke off. From then on it was the square type or nothing at all!

I was able to use a chisel and hammer and a lot of time to back the extractor out of the bolt. As someone else said, it depends on what bolt and where. If the bolt is big enough you might be able to drill beside the extractor and loosen it up a bit.
