The ignition timing runs of the speed sensor mounted at the back of the engine. It senses windows cut in a ring atached to the flex plate. The cam sensor only tells the ECU which phase, exhaust or compression, the cam is in and in fact the engine can run without this sensor by simulating the signal the book says. (I think it just fires the plugs on the exhaust stroke as well as the compression stroke.)
