Makes perfect sense, therefore basis of ignition timing is the engine speed sensor. It would seem that a faulty signal from the cam postion sensor would not set a misfire code but rather a faulty signal from the engine speed sensor would. As I understand it a misfire code (from a specific cylinder or multiple cylinders) is set by the ECU detecting a speed inconsistancy on any single revolution of the crank. Therefore this would seem to most likely be detected from the engine speed sensor.
