I did my first rebuild on a "D-type" last summer and it went OK.
Did a "J-type" after that and it was fine also.
Some mechanical knowledge helps but generally it's replacing parts that appear worn, taking your time, and keeping everything spotless.
You will need a clear exploded view of the unit as well as a couple hundred dollars for parts, gaskets etc.
A press makes things a lot easier for removing the bearings.

The "J-type" is supposedly a stronger. I never noticed a difference but I don't drive it really hard anyway.
