Point well taken, Art. On countless occasions I've been known to piss away an otherwise perfectly good afternoon in the name of science (much to the chagrin of my loving wife). So I certainly appreciate your point of view.
I'm most likely to do as you suggest in your second paragraph: replace a part first, then disassemble the old part just to see if I was right. (And once in a while, I actually am!)
