Warning lights all lit up

"When you turn the key on and all of the lights light up it is because they are finding ground through that red wire to the back of the alternator.

That's not quite how it works. The only lights that feed the Alternator D+ terminal are the Battery light and 4 others, which also ground to that line via diodes on the inst panel when the Key is turned on. The other 4 lights are:

• Parking Brake
• Brake Warning
• Bulb Failure Sensor
• Washer Fluid Level (700/900)

If ALL the warning lights are on, then it's just like "Key ON", when there is no alternator output.
