Update on M41 project 1800

Well, I jacked up my piece of antique steel on a city street this weekend, in 28-54 degree dry weather. I have pulled out the functional daily M41 to replace the front transmission seal. The bell housing bolt holes were striped. The HeliCoils went in without problems, I am impressed. The old stored M41 I wanted to check out went in. (I swear I am going to have to start lifting weights again if I want to keep on doing this stuff.) The only glitch was I did not switch out the larger rear driveshaft flange for my 71 142E before installing it.
Good news, the gear box works great. My problem is the OD. It engages as low as 42 MPH, but will "slip" out under anything more than moderate engine torque. Sort of felt like a slipping clutch effect. At 55 mph it tolerates less torque before disingaging (again feels like slipping clutch rather than smooth shift).
I think this means I do not have enough oil pressure to push out the springs. Fixes? check the pre filter and final filter. Try a different grade oil? which grade will increase pressure? I could rebuild the relief valve while the OD is in place, is that likely to help? How useful would buying a oil pressure gauge be to the diagnosis process?
I would like to get the spare M41 diagnosed and working while still on the car, to determine if a total rebuild is necessary when I put my daily driver M41 back in later, or not.
Thanks for any advice...
Joel
