IMHO, bigger inlet valves & a D cam aren't going to make that much difference. Try & save your money up for a head from John Parker, that's where the biggest bang for the buck is.

A little smoke on startup is just some dry valve stem seals. Just get some Datsun seals & borrow an air compressor. Takes about 30 minutes & you should get change out of $10.00 for the seals.
