Changing front struts... how safe of a jobis it?

I have a 1988 Volvo 240 that might need new front struts. I was thinking that I could do this job my self with a set of spring compressors, otherwise, I would have to spend about $200 labor. I wonder what makes this such a hard job. Also aslong as I'm using a spring compressor, what makes it so dangerous? With so many people saying that this is a dangerous task, I'm begining to reconsider.
Thanks and happy bricking.
