Changing front struts... how safe of a jobis it?

The danger comes from the very powerful strut springs. If the spring compressor fails of slips, repleasing the spring, that spring can easily kill you if it hits you in the face, head or even square in the chest. A quality spring compressor set is a must. I've used the ten dollar "made in China" compressors in the past and while they never failed, I never fully trusted them either. I now use a US made set. Sears sells a acme threaded rod, forged end USA made set for about forty bucks. A great tool and a good investment as they can be used many times without wearing out. More importanly, with safty lock pins and well designed hook ends, they hold on to those nasty springs with a very safe, secure grip. It's important to oil the threads on your compressor rods with a little 30w motor oil before use. Always tighten each compressor clamp evenly, alternating back an forth, a bit at a time. Never loosen or remove the strut top nut until it's clear the spring is compressed enough that it no longer exerting any pressure on spring seat. If you are careful this is a relatively easy job, but you must never under estimate the potential danger in those big springs. A Bentley 240 manual is very good to have for this and many other repairs.
