I'm with Neil on this one... I'd think that trying to redisign it for a different system could be less safe than the proper rubber coupling. That old one lasted more than 30 years. A new one will last as long.

It is a very safe system. That it broke was not its fault... it was your fault for not checking things. No offense intended there... I've done it myself more than once.
