Look at wires to back of alternator.
If heavy red wire, or smaller wire at rear of alternator is torn loose, you can have all those symptoms.

There's a 3rd wire, on rear of alt. close to engine block (that is, at about 8 or 9 o'clock if you're looking at rear face of alternator).

I've had both of those wires come apart on my '86.

Careful of the fat red wire - goes direct to batt. + terminal via the starter solenoid. Big POP if you ground it.
