To test alternator, use a voltmeter or multitester.
Cheap one is about $15 or so, worth it even if you never use it again.

Running the car (with all wiring intact) should show well over 12 volts, maybe 13.5 or 13.75 if alt. is OK.

To toughen the test a bit, turn on headlights + heater/cooling fan on high.
Should still be well over 12 volts with this load on the system.
