After going through all that I would not expect it to function properly without a complete flush and new/rebuilt/good used compressor.
At the very least you need to take the compressor out, completely drain it, refill with proper oil, flush the system and pull a hard vacuum on it. If you're going to do all of that replacing the compressor is only a couple of $$ and no extra work.
There is no reason you can't get mid/high 40s/low50s out of a 240 running R-12, I've seen 40 on a probe in the vents more than once on mine when it is properly charged and I'm on the freeway. Sorry haven't had any experience with 134 yet.
