I really haven't spent serious time tumbling the issue, but I would really like to utilize the storage capacity of Ipod-type. Having your audio library tather than a few CD's would be great. I personally lean towards the Creative Zen Touch, but I'm a PC rather than Mac.
I haven't done any research into the fidelity issues, but as long as I can get at least CD-quality sound I'll be happy. It seems that mobile tech should be moving in this direction as all else seems to be.
I like the idea of a stealth installation as I also can't stand the video-game looking head units. OK for a rice-rocket, not so much for an old Swede. Doing a stealth with a good head unit behind a blanking plate would do it. My idea was to convert the ashtray into the MP3 holder and just use it for control functions and have all the rest hidden under the seat or in a custom console. They are small enough it should work.
As I said this isn't something I've done more than cursory thinking about as the stereo is the very last thing I'll be doing and likely at least a year away. Besides, the longer I wait the cheaper MP3 players get.
There are some nice underseat subwoofers available, as well as a modest trunk mounted one from Infinity. Would be a nice addition to fill out the sound. These I've looked into for my girlfriend's Protege5.
Good luck and do share any discoveries.
