Just a follow-up here for 'archive searches.'
I ended up buying a new Blaupunkt head unit- couldn't get an answer as to whether the Secret Audio would accomodate an aux-in (iPod, etc.) and, well it just seemed like the easier solution to buy something new and hope I can use my programming skills to keep the LCD 'fireworks' under control. I'd rather have had something that 'looked the era' but it wasn't to be. This one has a removeable faceplate and luckily I park in a secure garage and rarely use the car in the city.
After doing a lot of measuring, surfing and poking around it seemed like making my own solution was going to be the only option for the front speakers. (I'm going to try an upload an image or two....). I used 1" plywood and a lot of back and forth from the car to the table saw to cut the mounts. Took some time, but was pretty easy. Mounted to a corner bracket which is drilled out to mount on a longer hood-mount bolt and a couple smaller corner brackets mounted to the kick panels (ouch I do hate drilling into 'the Bird's' metal!). Covered the ply with the same rubber backed carpet as the rear deck, used stainless hardware, etc. If the pic uploads correctly you'll see the hideous speaker grills, but heck, the speaker system was free! I was running out of time so I skipped it, but eventually I'll paint the grills matte black like I did for the ones on the rear deck speakers. The crossover (again hideous) on the pass side easily and conveniently zip-tied to the back of the parcel shelf, on the driver's side I screwed it to the kick panel. These are 'component' speakers, so they have separate tweeters. Once I got the mid/woofers mounted and connected I hooked up the tweeters and moved 'em around. Ended up mounting them to at the top screw on the c-pillars- pretty convenient, though a bit more visible than I'd like- at least they aren't quite as awful looking as the woofer grills are. If I had a choice and were buying speakers I'd get smaller ones than these- the mid/woofers are 6.5", so there's not a heck of a lot of board that they're mounted to under the dash and I think the bass response suffers. But again, they were free and it all sounds better then any stereo I've had in previous cars.... If anyone is interesed in more I can send a pic or two.
