I dont' knopw if its a "Smarter idea", but I'd try reloading it as much as you dare with the puller, then adding some impact force just at the hub with a strategically placed drift and 3# hammer maybe...

Good Luck...the darn things aren't welded on, it just seems that way sometimes...
