Welcome to the ranks. Volvo cars (120 and 140 ranks, probably some early 240s) uses SU or Stromberg carbs. Zenith Stromberg carbs on Volvo was from two versions: ZS175CD2S and ZS175CD2SE.
On the ZS-175CD2SE, the E stands as "emissions controlled" carbs (some guys say E is for "English joke" - that carbs was made on England). On more practical words, E means a lot of addditional gadgets added to comply the emissions standards. That gadgets with time goes really bad, making the carb unusable without a very serious rebuild and replacing of some parts.
This carb was based on the ZS-175CD2S (the "smoggy" original version, it uses a fixed needle). The ZS-175CD2SE uses a adjustable needle.
An image of the 175CD2S (no E) is available on

No idea about the S, both carbs uses that letter.
Anyway, if you want to rebuild the old beasts (I made it with my own ZS175CD2S), suggest check with the builders of the Strombergs: http://www.burlen.co.uk/ the on line catalog on this site will be help you to identify the model of carb used on your specific car by model and year.
Btw: K&N sell filters for our Strombergs, it is a good fit, see mine:

Happy volving
