I'll have a look tonight. Here's a more detailed version of what I did (tried everything I know, so it didn't take long!!). First I switched the wires from the old relay to the new one, and with the ground wire in the engine compartment, touched it to the battery. There was an click out of the relay and the lights went on/off as I grounded the relay.
Then I attached it to the transmission and it wouldn't go off (always grounded). I attached my circuit tester to the positive side of the battery and grounded it to the transmission switch (light goes on). Had my wife switch the car through the gears and it never went out (always grounded).
I'll pull the switch tonight and see if the spring thing is present. By the way, there is a lot of oil under there (looks like the oil drain plug is leaking (copper washer?). Could the oil be the problem?
