I drove a 544 for a long time that had the headlights hooked up as such, and never had a problem... but I wouldn't do it directly. I don't think the switch is designed to handle that much current. You'd want to hook the lights up to a relay which in turn would be hooked to the ignition switch I'd think. And having a relay in there makes for one more thing that can potentially fail when you need your lights the most...
