Removing ball-joints without killing myself 140-160 1968

I'm picturing something along the lines of:

1: chock the wheels
2: jack stands under front crossmember
3: jack under lower A-arm

How far up should the jack push the lower A-arm? Enough to put
a little tension on the arm? All the way up? If it is just under
tension, won't the upper arm snap up as soon as the lower ball-joint
is broken free?

4: remove / loosen bolt on ball joint
5: pickel fork / big fnn hammer
6: lower jack

Will the spring cooperate with reversing the process?

I would normally take the car to a shop but I want to clean and
paint the a-arms and inspect them for cracks and wear prior to
reinstalling.

Thanks!

chris
