Engine swap 200 1989

I agree,
I have done it both ways - it is definitely easier to take both
the engine and the tranny together. They are a lot
easier to separate when they are out of the car - the bell
housing bolts are a lot easier to get to. Definitely spend
the $20.00 or so and replace the rear main oil seal and
the front transmission seal while you have it out of the car.
Motor mounts are cheap and a good thing to replace
at this time as well.

Have fun with it.
