Yep. That's what's hanging under the back of my 245 wagon, behind a (stock?) '91 302, factory headers, Y-pipe, single 3" with one cat and one muffler. Nice rumble at idle, a bit of resonance at 1400-1700 rpm, and then quiets down to almost nothing on the highway. Truly the best of all worlds. :)
I experimented for years and years with my '89 Mustang, searching for this exact result. Factory headers, 4 cats, 2.25" duals. The original Ford mufflers were inaudible; the Flowmasters would rattle the teeth loose with resonance on the highway; the Gibsons were *almost* the answer.
Of course, everybody has a different goal in the matter... And remember that any discussions of noise levels need to include consideration of the entire system. No muffler will sound the same behind two radically different engines, and crossover shapes can affect dB level... it's not an exact science. Oh yea, and for what it's worth, I agree with Michael-- dual 3" would probably be too much for a small block motor, unless you're talking about a fire-breathing twin turbo monster.
