The only drawback to the 305 engine is the bore to stroke relationship. If my memory serves me correctly the 305 had a 3&7/8" bore (Stroked 283)and was better suited to rpms below 5800. They were not an engine that had much bottom end strength either. Why not a 350 cid? Swapping in a late model 327 large journal crank makes a bullet proof 302 that will run at 7000+ all day!
I agree with the other post that talked about making other mods that would affect breathing before re-camming. Trash the stock heads (.178" intakes) in favor of some .194" intakes at least before sticking in a radical cam. The old 350 hp 350 cam from TRW is about as strong as you want with the stock compression and no balancing on the lower end.
