I have just acquired an 00 V70 with auto ECC. As far as I have been able to tell, the AC is working OK but, of course, it hasn't been hot outside. The ECC error lights are blinking and I have read that, among other possibilities, the cabin temp sensor may need to be cleaned. It looks like the ECC unit itself needs to be removed in order to get to the back of the sensor. Are there instructions posted somewhere on removing the ECC unit? I just don't want to start prying, pulling, or jerking without being sure I won't damage anything.
I also removed the window defroster button next to the sensor, but it didn't expose any obvious way to get at the sensor through the front side of the dash unless the entire panel holding the window defroster button and the sensor could be removed at once. Is there a way to do that?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I was off opening presents. The ECC unit just "pops" out after you remove the radio. Don't bother unplugging the radio.
The cabin temp sensor also just pushes out from behind. I found that using a vacuum cleaner with the crevase cleaner will draw a lot of dust out of the unit.
My V70 just gave me the blinking lights the other day, so I turned the fan from auto to medium speed. Then I turned the dial to every picture symbol, letting it sit for a minute to let the vent motors work and position themselves. I also hit the recirculate button to activate that vent. Then I put the fan back on auto, turned the car off, restarted, and all was well.

Thanks, Klaus.
I got the air blast to do the trick. No more blinking since then.
But I will remember your note if I ever need to pull the sensor. Are you pretty sure your 98 would be the same as my 00 with regards to removing the sensor? Someone on Volvospeed said there were a couple of clips that needed to be pushed in. I already had it all reassembled once the air blast apparently cleaned out the dust, so I didn't go back and explore that any further.

Those spring clips that everyone mentions are the same on all of the switches. The temp sensor just has tight clips, and it is easier to push from behind than trying to pry the unit out from the front. Just a controlled muscle action :)

From my memory --- you need to remove the radio, reach up, and push it out. If I remember correctly it's stuck pretty tightly in there. I think it's held in with a couple of compression clips. Check the archives so you don't break something big and expensive, like the dashboard. I'm sure the procedure must be in the archives somewhere.

Thanks, BTC.
I got the radio out already and tried to push on the back of the ECC unit, but it didn't want to budge and I was afraid to use too much force without knowing more about what might be holding it back. Interestingly, the Info Display unit in my 99 Saab is held in only by friction and is very, very tight fit, but I was able to read up on it before applying the significant force that was required to remove it.
I did a lot of searching to try to find an answer, but maybe I don't know how to search the whole database - I'll go back and see if I was doing it right.
Thanks for your response,
Calvin

I couldn't find it in the Brickboard archives, either. Something seems screwey with the archives, the search feature doesn't seem to work as well as it did in the past -- you need to take the unit out to replace the bulbs, so this gets done.
From Volvospeed:
"If this is an automatic climate control model try this.
"if you have the original radio for the car and the power off code..remove the radio.. put your hand up in the crevice and push it out , its just held in by housing clips.
"The other way is pull off the dials for the temp control on both sides and use two pliers on the metal stub the knobs are attached to and yank it out.
"Warning..if this is the manual control...there are two screws under the dial which release it (one on each side under the dials)"
One of the Volvospeed hits had pictures of the removal from an 850. As I remember, it takes a *considerable* amount of pressure to get the clips to let go. (Just don't use too much so that it breaks the dashboard!)

Thanks very much for the follow up, BTC.
You must know how to search better than me. I searched on volvospeed too but didn't find what you found and nobody responded to my posting there. So I really appreciate it.
I'll have a chance to "give it a yank - or push - (carefully) tonight or tomorrow and then find out if the temp sensor is causing my error codes.
Have a great holiday!
