Engine power loss V70-XC70 1998

I drove my car over 100 miles yesterday on both country road, stopping at lights with no problem and highway with speeds up to 70 with no problem. No sign of any troubl, smooth as a well oiled watch. Pulled into a rest stop shut the engine down. Five minutes later it started but appeared to be running on one cylinder. Absolutely no power. It then stalled out and would not re start. Had it towed back to my residence and there it sits. Any suggestion as what to look for. The engine cranks but will not stay running. When it runs it is shaking and trembling with no power then dies.

Klaus,

I looked again at the main fuse box the only relays in there are a multi function relay, part # 949448 and two yellow relays and one thinner one with a letter J on top.

I see the 103 relay in FCP Grotten web site. It is red in color but I do not see it anywhere in my vehicle

Is your check engine light on? When you put the key in pos II, can you hear the fuel pump prime? If no noise from the fuel pump search on fuel pump relay and bypass the relay.
Is your tank empty?

Hi Klaus,

You helped me with the last problem, I knew you would be there for this one.

I have no warning lights that were displayed, the tank is on 1/4

As to hearing the pump, I have not checked that yet..

Where is the pump relay located??

I do not see a fuse nembered 103, I did see a 20 amp fuse in the main fuse box with a label fuel pump and coil. It looks Ok but I replaced it anyway. I do not hear the fuel pump so I guess I have to remove it. THE FUEL filter I REPLACED AT 110,000 I NOW HAVE 210,000 IT IS DUE BUT I DON'T THINK THE CAUSE.

The relay is under the black fuse cover. You have to undo the 4 T25 screws and lift off the cover. The 103 relay is nice and pink!

Grab a short piece of wire and pull out the relay. Jump connector 87 and 15, that should turn on the fuel pump when the key is on. Let's hope that works, the fuel pump is major bucks in the awd cars.

Some suggest tapping on the relay first with the plastic handle of a screwdriver, just to wake it up. The soldering gets old and brittle, so if you know how to solder, remove the cover on the relay and fix it your self.

The relay is in the engine fuse box, numbered 103. If the relay is inop, the fuel pump doesn't work. Just listen for the fuel pump noise, which is only for a second or two every time the key goes to position II.

Let's hope it is the relay, the fuel pump is a MAJOR operation to replace and costly.
If your fuel filter hasn't been replaced yet, now is a good time to start thinking about it. Volvospeed.com has a pretty good write up, but I am being too lazy to look it up for you :)
