With 36,440 miles on my '98 V70AWD, I decided to call VIP and find out when they were going to send me info about possibly getting the VIP warranty. The basic new car warranty runs out this coming August. They said, "we're sorry, since November 1st we no longer issue VIP policies to cars with more than 36,000 miles on them." I never received any mailings from Volvo about the VIP at all during the 3 years I leased this car. I had included the warranty as part of my decision making about whether or not I'd buy the vehicle out of lease (which I did). Now I'm out on a limb, so to speak.
Caveat emptor.

Doug, I have had my S70/GLt for just 11 months now, and about a month ago I got a letter from Volvo VIP, with all the info about the VIP warrantys. I will get the 7 year 85,000 mile plan, as I put about(or just under) 10,000 mi. a year on the car.
I must say I did price out this plan at a dealer or two, and the best price so far is direct from VIP.
If I WAS you I would ask if you could still get the VIP and pay a small sur-charge. They do have this charge for any new car that has over 18,000 miles anyway....I think its lke $50 or $150. Anyhow it cant hurt to ask a few more times....
good luck

Steve,
his surcharge would have been (at his current mileage) $150 but on November 1st, Volvo changed their plans on VIP warranties; the prices went up a bit an there are not surcharges based on the "old" mileage breakdown. Now they have plans for new, for cars from 12000 to 24000 miles and for cars from 24001 to 36000 miles. Anything over 36000 cannot get the factory VIp warranty.

Yannis,
What is the expected price for a car with 35,860 miles. Since my car is still being repaired after the accident, I know that the mileage hasn't increased by much.
With all the horror stories about A/C evaporators, I think it might be a wise investment.
However, VCNA should have notified its purchasers about the change in policy. That is just good public relations.
Thanks,
Bryan

Don't know, right off the top of my head, Bryan. We just got the rates and I have not memorized them, yet. I will check on Tuesday and I will be sure to post it. I need to know the exact model you have.

Yannis,
It's a1998 S70 GLT w/leather, Gran-touring package, moon-roof, TRACS, cold weather package, fogs & premium stereo. The mods are Bilsteins, IPD strut-tower brace and K&N filter.
Another post states that the VIP must be purchased at the time of delivery.
So, what's up? Thanks,
Bryan

5yrs/100,000 miles $2380 $2700
6yrs/75,000 miles $2030 $2345
6yrs/100,000 miles $2685 $2970
6yrs/125,000 miles $3385 $3835
7yrs/85,000 miles $2480 $2845
7yrs/100,000 miles $3075 $4465
If you want to buy from us, e-mail me at the above e-mail address and I will discount ANY of these plans by 20%. I can also have you signed up for the 10-month interest-free plan, where the DISCOUNTED price can b broken down in 10 interest-free payments (paid by credit card) + tax.

Well that 36k limit really stinks!!! I wish I knew that before I bought the car at 42k!
Yannis, I would have bought the warranty from you in a second. Thanks for offering great terms. Anything else you want to sell me?
Finaly remark, I bough my car privately in September. AFter looking around, two dealers offered to sell me an extended warranty. Is this not the same thing?

What else do you want to buy? :) Your car is just wonderful...I checked it out a month ago...One of a kind! And congrats on your baby and the "new" house (I also have a 6-week old boy!).
When did these dealers offer you an extended warranty? Any offers they made to you before November 1, they cannot honor them anymore, provided they offered you a VIP Plan.
Aftermarket warranties are not trustworthy as many Volvo Retailers will not honor them and (unless you buy a warranty supported by a reputable company) they may go out of business and then you are out of luck (and $$$).

Yannis,
You are correct, sir. Those dealers offered my warranties before 11/1. I decided to pass on them and hope for the best (knocking on wood now). My car's got 46k now. It need a bulb in the stereo, the Service light reset, and the seat belt "button" that keeps the metal clip from sliding to the floor when the belt's not in use is gone. So that's my big warranty work that I'll have done before 50k. After that, i'm on my own!!!
Thanks for the kind remarks. And cograts on your new child. As time and money permit, I'll be looking for lots of stuff for my car. I'll keep you posted. Until then, it's mainly maintenance items.

Yannis,
I appreciate the information!
What is the difference in coverage between the comprehensive and limited warranties?
Since I keep my cars an average of 12+ years, the extended warranty seems like a reasonable investment.
Thanks again,
Bryan

Hi Bryan,
the differece between the two plans are between the components covered which is too big of a list for me to type here. The Limited covers (I think) 105 major components whereas the Comprehensive covers close to 512+ components. If you want to know exactly, you can e-mail me your address or fax number and I can mail/fax the list.

Bryan,
no it does not have to be purchased when you buy the car. Unde rthe old plan, you had until 49,999 miles to buy it (or 4yrs), with various surcharges occuring at certain mileage inervals. Now, under the new plan, you have until 36000 miles. I am off on Mondays, so I will get back to you with a price tomorrow.

I went to the dealer yesterday and pleaded my case. He said he'd call VIP on Monday and 'discuss' it with them. BTW, the book now says that the VIP must be purchased before delivery of the car and that after that date, vehicles are 'ineligible' for the protection.
It appears now, that EVERYONE who doesn't have a VIP is unable to buy one.
Really reflects poorly on Volvo.
