Help me find an engine noise please! 850 1994

I've been trying to find the source of a moaning noise that is coming from the timing belt area. The noise only happens when the car has been sitting in a cool garage all night, or sitting outside when it's cold out. If it sits in the sun for a while in the morning it won't make the noise. As you rev the engine (drive) it gets louder and only lasts for about 1-2 minutes. After that it doesn't come back again until the next morning, unless it's a really cold day then it will happen in the evening again on the way home from work. So far I've had the dealer replace the serpentine belt idler pully, and a timing belt tensioner and pulley. Is there anyone out there that could possible help me find this noise????!!!! I appreciate the help greatly.

Scott K

    HERE IS THE SCOOP DROOP.

THE RESONTAING NOISE YOU SPEAK OF IS PRETTY MUCH INHERENT IN THE ENGINE. DIFFERENT FIXES CIRE THIS PROBLEM.1) WATER PUMP BEARING 2)TURBO AS IT ON

THE TURBO ENGINE ONLY THAT I HAVE HEARD IT. 3) PULLEYS.

Re: Help me find an engine noise please! 850 1993

I've got a similar sound w/my 93 na 850. Sounds like blowing accross the top of a bottlel. Sporadic. Can't find it. Does NOT change w/engine speed. Car runs fine. Sometimes a slight right turn will trigger it. Although, last nite (after the car wash--about 50 degrees)it did it for a few seconds off the stop light...

Might be nature of the beastie??

It is comforting to hear other folks have the same thing.

    Tom

Good luck! I've had the same problem on my 1994 850T since it was about a year old. Neither the dealer nor an independent shop was ever able to find the problem, and I've ignored it the past few years. My timing belt and accessory belt have been changed, but the moan is still there. I'm beginning to think it's an air intake leak that's only evident when it's cold. It's exactly the same sound after 6 years, so I doubt that it's anything mechanical.

I have a feeling that I like you won't be able to find the source of the sound. I have a tech from VCNA looking at the car, he first diagnoised it as the timing belt tensioner and some pulley in the timing belt loop, but I guess that wasn't it. Hoppefully he'll find it. If he does I will definitely post the result. Thanks...

I think this sound might be coming from the electric servo mechanism that adjusts air inflow in the colder temperatures. It is in the throttle box somewhere. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner on mine and goes away in 30-45 sec. I read on this board that this might be a source of the noise.

I need to look into that just to make sure.

Re: Help me find an engine noise please! 850 1997R

The method to diagnose the 850 pulley/belt noise is as follows:

        1. See if your car has the new longer style accessory belt. This belt solved the slipping over the alternator problem.

        2. Before you cold start the car, remove or loosen the accessory belt. If the car still makes the noise, the problem is under the timing belt cover. If the noise stops, check the accessory belt tensioner, pulley, and related components like alternator, compressor, power steering pump. Use a mechanic's stethascope or short length of hose held to ear to narrow down the source of the noise.

        3. If coming from under the timing belt cover, check the tensioner pulley, the idler pulley, and the water pump bearing for noise with the stethascope.

P.S. helps to have someone open the throttle to ~1500 rpms while you are sniffing around as the noise appears louder at this engine speed than idle

NO THEY ARE ALL WRONG!!!! I replaced belts and pulleys and tensioners up the ying-yang!!! Yet the source of that wretched noise was the oil pump and I had it replaced. It was around $500 but was totally worth it as that sound has NEVER returned. My local volvo dealer said that the same problem was diagnosed on another 850 turbo wagon in my town. SPREAD THE WORD!!!!

Rade, would the oil pump make the noise dependent on the engine idle? I would think the oil pump would make the noise all the time, and wouldn't be dependent on the idle speed of the engine? This is completely a guess so please correct me if I'm wrong. My noise only happens when it is cool and the RPM's are up, and only for the first 1-2 minutes of driving.

            Thanks for the help..

            Scott
