Yes, the error P0455 comes up and now that the weather is nice, I thought it was time to find the solution.
The top of the cannister on my 1996 has a large line and two smaller lines. Large line is good, one small line goes up around the engine fan and looks fairly new.
Question: The other line is missing?????? All I have is a U shaped connector that fits on the top of the cannister, just like the other smaller line. But, there is NO vacuum hose. Nothing. Where is it supposed to connect and how does it get there?
This is my only code except for the rear O2 sensor, which may or may not get replaced this year...

Maybe next time you have a problem like this you could find one at a used car lot and check things out......

No stranger to 1995 models, the 1996-7 850's are slightly different. The canister is rectangular. It has 3 lines on the top:
One large line, I assume is from the gas tank.
Two smaller lines, about 1/4 inch outside diameter:
One is connected to the purge valve and continues to the intake manifold.
The other small line has a 90 degree elbow (like the one above) and nothing attached to the elbow. This has been off for a while, as there is dust inside the elbow hole. I had just thought about threading a screw into the elbow, but I really want to know where this second small line goes.
EDIT:
Because I can't copy the picture:
http://www.jimellisvolvoparts.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_product=7135157&ukey_assembly=1059725
What I am concerned about is LINE #7. I don't know where it goes... because it is missing on my car.
End EDIT

Klaus,
Without looking at my car I am fairly certain that that line goes along the front crossmember and turns rearward near the accessories. It continues on ( to points unknown to me) under the engine and basically runs parallel to the fuel lines coming forward. Only reason I know this is because that line kept getting in my way during my engine swap... I think we are talking about the same thing anyways...

Pic&pull to the rescue. I was waiting for a 1996-7 850 because of other parts and a 1997 arrived on Friday. Someone beat me to the car, the charcoal cannister and lines were all gone :( I got some other needed parts anyway.
There was a 1993 850, and I was really lucky there. The vacuum line was there and it ended with a join behind the subframe. After a lot of cleaning, I jacked up my 1996 and could not find a join. ??? The plastic line is one piece, front to rear of the car.
I cleaned up the line on the car, cut off at the front of the subframe and joined the two sections. Then cut to length and routed it to the charcoal cannister. I zip tied it to the top of the subframe.
Hopefully, no more P0455 or whatever the number is for a large leak.

I wonder if the line came off when the clutch was replaced?
I wish the pick&pull would get some more 850's. I need some minor parts...

My P&P has no 850s currently and my parts car has gone off to Valhalla. What were you looking for? I did grab some stuff off of it before I was hauled off....

I appreciate the offer Matt, but all I need is junk stuff. Except for a hand brake cable so that I can compare it to the one FCP sent me, and then trhow it away.
And a vacuum hose/line that goes from the cannister to wherever!!! Dealer has it for a few bucks, I think, but I am sooooo cheap.

Hey I had to offer after all of the help you have given my way!
Hope you get it sorted easily (and cheaply!)
BTW My project car has been great! So glad I decided to do it. And with your advice and that of others here it was a fairly easy deal. Handles great, runs like a top... I couldn't be happier with it!

Thank you for the kind words. When it gets warmer and nicer outside, could you do me a favor and tell me where the vacuum line gets routed? I found the other end, and it ends on the front of the subframe, passenger side. There are no telltale marks as to where the original vacuum line is attached to make its way to the charcoal cannister. I don't want to have it flopping around.
The end I found looks like it was chewed off.
Still no signs of 850's in the P&P...

I took a peek at my car and it is just sorta hanging there, kind of in the belly tray, kind of not! It is real hard to see underneath because I have the H&R lowering springs installed, so there isn't much room. I do not recall any clamps holding it in place.

Yup, zip ties were my solution. If you want to go deluxe, use the first zip to fasten a second one to the hose. Then use the second one to fasten to the body/frame. That way there is less chance of the hose rubbing the body.

Klaus,
Are you talking about the lines that run all the way from the tank up to the engine bay? If so, and if a 1999 V70 is the same, here is what I can see on mine. Under the passenger’s front seat floorboard there is a plastic holder under the car that I think was screwed to the floor from inside the cabin. I believe this plastic piece has snap open/close gates to guide the hoses. The reason I am vague about this part is that I caught mine on something and broke it so I don’t have a good example to view.
From this location the smaller line goes under the anti-sway bar, and there is a clip to hold it just forward of the anti-sway bar. The clip is above the metal so that the line is protected from the road. It continues forward under the steering rack, and about midway between the steering rack and the oil filter there is another clip on the edge of the subframe. From there it turns up just next to the oil filter on the outboard side of the filter. Sorry, but after that I can’t see what it does without my ramps, and I already have a dead Benz on the ramps.
The larger line goes above the sway bar and steering rack on the passenger (right) side. Just about at the point that the line becomes easily visible in the engine bay I think it is supposed to go into a clip that would occupy a hole in some body structure (painted body color). This hole is easily visible in mine, but there is no clip. However, as I said, mine got yanked on and I probably lost that clip. From there it ties to a metal line.
I was unable to actually find the charcoal canister in mine, so perhaps none of this info is of any use to you. I wasn’t sure if you meant the vent line or the line that runs from the canister to the vacuum source. If you need that info, and if you think it would be the same on mine, and if you can tell me how to find the C canister, I can look. Yes, I know that’s a lot of ifs!

Thanks, but the 1998+ cars are different. My charcoal cannister is under the battery tray. The 1999 cannister is by the right rear wheel, so all you have is the line going to the valve and the intake manifold.

Well, that explains why I didn't see the canister under the hood, not that I would have looked under the battery either.

Klaus,
By any chance is there a vacuum line schematic posted somewhere under the hood? Some cars have that but off hand I can't recall if Volvos do or not. (Shows how much I pay attention.)
Come to think of it, I believe all charcoal cannisters have to be vented outward to the atmosphere in one way or another, otherwise the engine vacuum would collapse the gas tank. Could the open port be serving that function?

If the decal doesn't fall off after a few years, or fades to oblivion, it leaves a lot to be desired. It only shows a few lines, not the entire EVAP system or the engine manifold vacuum lines.

Item #7 is what is missing:
http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=240141&ukey_make=865&ukey_model=11966&modelYear=1996&ukey_category=7862&ukey_driveLine=478&ukey_trimLevel=11028
It wraps around the front of the engine and has a join after the subframe on the passenger side.
