How accurate is 'distance to empty'? 850

At least once my car reached 0 miles (distance to empty), I drove about 5 more miles, filled the tank up and found out that there were at least 2 gallons left in the tank (through simple math). It is reasonable to have a safety net of 3-4 US gallons left when the reading is 20-30 miles (distance to empty).
