I used to be in a similiar situation on making a decision. I had a 940 SE wagon totaled and bought a 1998 V70 turbo GLT...w/ 80k or so for almost $k a couple years back. It has been my best running car. I put a lot into it to make sure the maint. (which was carefully kept up- by a corp. owner) was all updated and kept up with the routine stuff. It's been a pleasure on the whole.. Now I'm looking for a 2nd wagon for the family, my sweet spot will probably be a 2002 V70 wagon, I'm generally staying away from AWD and XCs... I'm already covered with an SUV, when needed. Good luck.
