Well gang, good news.

I got under the car and turned each rod 1/4 turn in the opposite direction, so the wheels would go the same way, and walla, the car goes straight and the wheel is centered. Actually, to be perfect, each rod needs about 1/16 turn or less in the same direction. But the good news is that it was really easy to do... once I regained consciousness from hitting myself in the head with the wrench... yes, I really did this when loosening the lock nut and yes I blacked out for a second... I know, another stupid human trick:-)

Seriously, the interesting thing I found was that I had to turn the wheels towards the direction that the steering wheel wanted to turn. This forced the steering wheel to recenter itself the opposite direction.
