unless your check engine light is on, you won't have codes.. My '96 never shows codes, irritates the crap outta me when something's going wrong.
You can read fuel pressure right off the fuel rail, look on the right side of it there's a hook-up. You should see something above 43 psi when the key's on but engine isn't.
I figured it was too soon to know if it would reoccur, but I thought maybe you got it home and tried it again and happened again.
I'm not actually sure on interval for fuel filter, I've gone with 50k (i think its 60, but might be 100...) The filter's a beast, and I recommend fcpgroton to get it as it's about half price of Autozone and you get OEM. It'll just take a few days to get it to you.
