my aging 850... switch to a 98 v70? 850

you can always look up what transmission your car has - Volvo has all user manuals available for free online here:
https://www.customers.volvocars.com/owners/ownerlibrary.aspx

When in doubt the 3309/Toyota-IV is backwards compatible, so that one's safer. Better yet, pick a universal ATF that says it meets Toyota-IV or 3309. Then you're safe on the specs front and getting the benefits of synthetic fluid as well.
