You're right about that. I proved it. All is well now though. My problem was not one cam's relationship to the other cam, but rather both cam's relationship to the crank. The pointer on the crank sprocket is definite, but the exact spot it should point to on the block casting is questionable.
BTW - if you're a tooth off, the CE light doesn't come on immediately. It waits until the SECOND time you start the engine - after you've already celebrated your (false) success with some foamy libation.
