My irritation with your responses has to do with the fact that I was asking for feedback regarding installing a used ETM that was previous installed on a slightly different year/model of volvo and instead of answering my technical question, you starting marketing and sales pitching a very expensive alternative with no regard to the fact that lots of people install used ETM's successfully on their volvo's. Your responses seem overly biased towards promoting buying a new ETM vs making do with a good low mileage used unit. Considering the state of the economy, I think providing information on the boards about how to successfully install a good used ETM and save money would be of strong interest to many forum members and non-members. I also was irritated that regardless how much I said that I was not interested in buying a $649 new unit when I already had a good used unit, you continued to be sarcastic and push for the new ETM solution. To me that bias is questionable and that is why I took an agressive tone towards you. I later heard from another member who posted in your defense that you have a right to your opinions and promotion and marketing of products of your liking on the boards because you've been a long time member. I also heard from the other member that you do not even own a volvo.

Anyhow, yes my dealer programmed the ETM to my car for only 1 hours labor charge of $119 and I was able to install the ETM myself with 4 bolts and a socket wrench in about 1 hour of my personal time. It was quite easy. The car has been running solid to this day without any issues. In total I saved about $400 over buying a new ETM going this route and for some people that might be small beans for for me, $400 is significant and so I kept to the lowbuck DIY solution. I recently the community college over here has a vocational auto repair program where they teach kids to fix cars and get them ASE certified. Its a public school, they do auto repairs for a flat fee of $35 labor and they have alot of high tech equipment. If I were to do this again, I would take the car there and bring in the used ETM for them to install and program for me instead of going to the dealer. Basically they want the students to have a chance to work on a variety of cars and problems. This repair is a good one for them and so they don't charge anything except the $35 admin fee for their time.

If economic times pickup for me and I can afford, I might buy a new ETM but for now, I am happy with the used parts solution I chose. It turns out the yellow label ETMs are still being sold by junkyards with manufacture dates as early as 2010 and 2011 which means they're pretty fresh and new still.
