I am glad you saved money after 2 years. The alternative to buying a new ETM at the dealer is to go the XemodeX route and get a remaned ETM that will never fail for $500 ($400 2 years ago). The dealer will charge for the new yellow tagged unit + changing the software to mate it to your car and drive the cost over $800, about double the XemodeX route.
That you can get a used unit from a junkyard is great! The problem there is you never know what shape the unit is in and the cost varies from yard to yard. And if your current ETM does not allow you to drive, then you need to have the car towed for programming?
I normally do not support vendors, I like to fix what ever is wrong with my Volvos in my own garage. ETMs, DIMS, and other computers are out of my knowledge range and I look around for cheaper-than-the-dealer solutions.
BTW, I currently own a 1996 854. I have owned, in order, 1988 245, 1988 780, 1995 8454T, 1998 V70R, 1996 855, 1967 220s.
