Does the idle speed slow down when you put it into gear with the foot on the brake? You may also have a dirty idle control motor/dirty throttle body.

Replacing the PCV system is a 5 hour job, not including breaks for hot chocolate. The latex glove should never expand on a warm engine, that means that the vacuum system is compromised and you will run rich. If it gets worse, the cam seals may push out. Worst case is the rear main seal starting to leak.

Make sure the flame trap isn't clogged first. If there is still a plastic screen inside, throw it away! that is a Volvo TSB by the way.
