Today, day of start up after head gasket

Hi, well I got a few things fixed + one more thing to start again on.
For the cams, pulleys and timing I got my wife to hold my steel homemade cam lock tool by installing in the intake cam rear slot as usual but the wife physically angling it up, pushing it with fingers and hands, so that when I applied pressure to the center bolt the cam her side wouldn't turn down. My tool always turns down due to thickness of steel but extra width of slots. It was easy to hold though upward as it is angle steel so that front side butts against edge and you can squeeze against it and after a short time we were able to end with cam slot 'on the ILS' at the head seam, whereas before it ended partially downward. Later, taking the car around the block it was quite active in power and idling was smooth with no missus.
Squeal, the annoying whine turned out to be the pipe on top of the breather box, that leads along the front covered in some kind of foam, was not in any way connected. It had slid off the pipe, and I hadn't previously thought to clamp it. The suck of air was causing sound and made the engine run rough.
The problem remaining, the big one, is the smoke that starts to curl up from rear of engine block. Just a little after heated up, about two or three minutes, the gas rises up the back from within or under the manifold. I haven't yet installed the heat shield. A few bolts go in through the manifold, but do they plug exhaust gases?
I'll have to work out the springs on the bolts and where they go and how it fits ..
Apart from that I am hoping it is not the head at exhaust. And I wonder how that can be:
-it is torqued down accurately with a calibrated wrench.
-angled well to 130.
-each bolt ended about 90 lbs.
-gasket is correct fit.
-head had been at the shop in carbonoff soak for three nights.
New seals, valves ground etc Could it be not straight? The intake side is nice. It would be some kind of warp.
My block was checked when shop guy came out with straight edge to check it. Apparently it was okay.
PS: I put the exhaust manifold gasket with silver shiny side outward and fibre bit to the head. But I'll rip it down again.

Thanks for ideas and keep 'em coming.
