The gap needs to be less than .030 to operate normally. At .040 the clutch will no longer engage. It is OK to have a gap of only .010, so long as it is the same all the way around - hard to do with bread clips and zip ties.

Go ahead and reduce the gap. StLouis is worse than FL.
