Volvo's position: Check automatic transmission fluid level only if an external leak is identified. Volvo recommends changing transmission fluid every 50,000 miles/80,000 kilometers, only on vehicles used for towing, or when a message appears in the instrument panel text window.
Because there is no dipstick for the tranny, the level can only be checked by removing the fill plug. And then the car must be completely level, a bit hard to achieve using jack stands (4).
Note that the change interval is 50K miles. I would assume that city, stop and go traffic would be just as hard as trailing a light trailer.
