Some of the 6 cylinder XC90's have a standpipe up inside the drain plug that is used to gauge the fluid level. Look for a smaller screw/plug centered in the larger drain plug. You remove that center screw and fill the trans with fluid until it starts to drip out of that center screw hole. Then replace the center screw. You want the fluid at operating temperature in order to achieve the proper level.
