My 00 S40 developed the exactly the same problem as you described. The dealer
checked the brakes and lubricated all the brake parts and hand brake cable. But
the noise is still there. The rear brake pads have a few thousand miles left.
I usually brake gentlely. Hopefully after I change the pads in the near future
the noise will go away.
