why are volvos also known as bricks 850

I believe the term came from the days when Volvos were boxier looking (pre '90s) such as the 240s and 740s. To me, the 900s and 850s don't look boxy anymore but that's my opinion. Maybe they still do if compared to a curvy looking car like the 'Vette for example.
