I repair them daily but I'm more than thrilled to drive my old 740 everyday in comparison to the nasty problems that have plagued S80s since day #1. S80s are very comfortable and have great handling but that's where it stops. I'll keep my 740 at least another 10 years. There's absolutely no comparison in the overall quality of your 740 compared to an S80 although I do think the newer ones have improved. Don't get a '99, worst year ever. It's not a car that anyone would want after the warranty expires because every part on it is very costly to replace, much has to be done at a dealer and there's no way the newer Volvos have the same overall, longevity and durability of the older cars.
If you opt for a V70, steer clear of any AWD V70 as that's yet another probable bummer after warranty. 2WD V70s have been fairly troublefree, so they're decent IMO.
